Filozoiki Kythiron is the Animal Welfare Organisation of Kythira

Our aim is to give the animals on Kythira a better, happier and healthier life by:
1/ Educating the locals on animal welfare by introducing an education program in the primary schools.
2/ Neutering of stray cats to help control the cat population on Kythira.
3/ Prevent unwanted pregnancies for dogs by sterilization.
People that own dogs have mostly two or more and they all "live" together (female and male), and naturally they mate. The pups will either be killed at birth or dumped later in life.
4/ Prevent neglect and mal treatment of dogs, focusing on the ones that are kept on short chains or live in a very small environment without food and water.
5/ Prevent goat and sheep having to "walk" around with their legs tied together (cobbled) so they cannot run away.
6/ Prevent animal poisoning by educating local people and utilizing all legal measures available involving police and local authorities.

The organisation helps with immediate care for all animals out of the veterinarian clinic, it's our hope one day to have a location where we can take care of sick animals as well as shelter animals in need.

The organisation helps with the daily need of the animals by placing feeders all around the island, these feeders are filled on a regular basis by members of the organisation or local volunteers.

At the moment I am taking care of approximately 30 cats at my home that are in need of medication or other kinds of attention, these are all cats that wouldn't survive on their own.

The organisation works closely together with the local vet (Katherine Stathatos),
who played a important roll in the setting up of the animal welfare organisation.

There are some volunteers on the island who will help in case of emergencies, catching cats and/or feeding a group of cats, although we could use many more.

By asking for support through multimedia the organisation is known in many countries, we also placed some editorials in newspapers and magazines abroad.

Fortunately the locals are now starting to see and appreciate the positive work the organisation is achieving with the neutering of cats, and slowly more and more people are asking for help, and of course for this we need funds.
Locals and tourists are noticing the improvement and are complimenting us on how healthy and good the cats look.

As the local government is obligated by law to take care of stray animals in their jurisdiction by providing food, neutering and shelter, we hope that one day we'll be able to do much more for ALL animals in need on Kythira.

We collect money to keep going through multimedia and by placing collection cans all around the island where people can donate, of course donations can be made through the website by bank transfer or Paypal. In the future we are going to organise fund raising events on Kythira.

How did it start;
The organisation has grown from the "adopt a cat" program that I started at the end of 2012 to gain control on the cat population by neutering and vaccinating the cats on Kythira.
In a period of two years Katherine and I managed to neuter and vaccinate over 400 cats, in this same period it became clear that much more was needed to help the animals on Kythira and I decided to make it a legal animal welfare organisation in the hope to work closely with the locals, the local government and organisations worldwide.
